I am in York until tomorrow. I am speaking at Footsey 2008 tomorrow afternoon. This year’s Footsey is held at the York Racecourse.
But what I really want to write about is the hotel I am staying tonight. Middlethorpe Hall is absolutely fabulous! I am very impressed. The area is serene. The main building is majestic. The garden, acres of it, is very very nice. And the spa….. you just have to experience it to know what I am talking about.
Middlethorpe Hall reminds me of Henley Park Hotel in Washington DC where I stayed in April. Both are historic buildings rich in history. I could spend hours reading about the stories of these historic houses. But, now, I need to get ready for dinner.
Do we have a similar “Historic Hotels” scheme in Malaysia?

I would say yes. We have the railway stations Heritage Station Hotel at KL (http://www.heritagehotelmalaysia.com) and Majestic Station Hotel at Ipoh (www.majesticstationhotel.com). Then a certain converted Peranakan House in Malacca, the Carcosa Seri Negara (http://www.carcosa.com.my), and of course, the Eastern and Oriental in Penang (http://www.e-o-hotel.com/eoh/index.htm). Needless to say, there is a lack of historic hotel in a more typical Malay setting.
I’d say we should take up one of those non-functional old madaris and convert it into a spiritual retreat centre either following a specific Order principles, or one that is more academic and transcends religious barrier the like of the Beshara Seminary and score others. We could incorporate traditional martial arts or healing techniques like yoga, qiqong etc as well as traditional spa like Ayurvedic-based or Malay bidan remedies for women-oriented treatment.
