GERAMM

Yes…. ok…. I know …. Anwar has been accused of sodomy again. But so many people is commenting on it, I thought I better blog about something else.

This caught my eyes today – GERAMM

GERAMM says that they are “a pakatan generasi muda yang membentuk solidariti untuk menyatakan bantahan ke atas kenaikan mendadak harga minyak yang diumumkan oleh kerajaan pada awal Jun lepas.” Their “About Us” page starts by saying: “Kempen berterusan dan himpunan-himpunan rakyat secara teratur untuk membantah kenaikan harga minyak perlu diadakan.”

GERAMM stands for Gerakan Rakyat Anti Manipulasi Minyak. The naming shows their confusion. If they are against price manipulation, then they should be supporting the abolition of subsidies. Price manipulation is when the state intervenes to artificially distort fuel price with subsidies.

Obey the Sultan of Johor!

The Star reported today:

Johor Sultan unhappy with DAP’s Gwee
By MEERA VIJAYAN

JOHOR BARU: The Sultan of Johor Sultan Iskandar Ismail has expressed his displeasure at a DAP state assemblyman for not wearing the official attire at the State Assembly sitting.

He also challenged Bentayan state assemblyman Gwee Tong Hiang to come forward and seek an audience with him.

“Ada yang kat sini, yang semalam atau yang hari kelmarin, yang menunjuk-nunjuk jaguh, yang tak mahu pakai senonoh, kalau hendak, ini jam keluar kat sini (There are people here, who yesterday or the day before, tried to be heroes by not dressing decently … come out now here),” he said during his speech to officially launch the district of Kulai Jaya on Sunday.

Gwee was not present at the function.

The controversy began when the state DAP assemblymen did not know whether to wear the songkok or not at the first State Assembly sitting.

A decision was made by the DAP state committee for all four DAP assemblymen to wear the full attire.

However, Gwee chose to dress in a Western-style suit and was thrown out of the assembly by Speaker Datuk Ali Hassan about an hour before Sultan Iskandar arrived on Friday.

Meanwhile, after the function Sunday, Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said that henceforth, all those attending the Sultan’s functions would be required to abide by the regulations.

He said Malay men had to be dressed in Baju Melayu Johor Teluk Belanga and songkok (headgear), while Malay women had to wear the Baju Kurung Johor Teluk Belanga with tudung (headscarf).

“Non-Malay men must be dressed in suits with songkok, while non-Malay women must wear the Baju Kurung Johor Teluk Belanga.

“Non-Malay women must wear the tudung if they are in the Sultan’s palace,” he said.

When contacted, Gwee declined to comment.

Even non-Malay women have to wear the headscarf when in the Sultan’s palace. Yeah, right! Somenone needs to have a word with the Sultanah. Or does Her Royal Highness boycott all the Sultan’s functions in protest of such policy?

Is it possible to have unity in a diverse society? A case study of Malaysia

The Conservative Muslim Forum is organising a series of Policy Roundtables to look at various issues. Our aim is to produce a short Policy Briefing for the Party following each Roundtable. We therefore expect the Roundtables to be ‘learning dialogues’ in which we hope participants will actively join in the debate and contribute ideas to the discussion.

Places for all Roundtables are strictly limited. To attend, please register your interest by sending your details (name, occupation, contact details) to me via email wansaiful@gmail.com. Please register your interest early so that we can confirm your seat allocation.

Theme: Is it possible to have unity in a diverse society? A case study of Malaysia
Date: Wednesday, 2 July 2008
Time: 6.00pm for 6.15pm start, to 7.45pm. Please allow 20 minutes to pass security
Venue: House of Lords, Westminster, London.

Background: Malaysia’s is a diverse population. Ethnically, it comprises of Malays, Chinese, the indigenous people, Indians, and various tribes in the Borneo island. Religiously, the proportion of Muslim to non-Muslim is almost equal, with a healthy number of Christians, Buddhists and Hindus. The country has been working hard to maintain harmony between the different groups. With Britain becoming an increasingly plural society, what can British policy-makers and the Conservative Party learn from the experience of its former colony, Malaysia? How can we ensure unity in the increasingly diverse British society? Dr Ooi Kee Beng, Fellow, Institute of South East Asian Studies (ISEAS) and an expert commentator on the sociopolitics on the South East Asian region will present his thoughts. Join us to discuss this important issue.

This event is jointly organised by the Conservative Muslim Forum and the Malaysia Think Tank London.

To attend, please send your name, occupation, and contact details to me via email: wansaiful@gmail.com

“Explanation”?

SMS received today: Wan, Enta tak nak respon kpd ‘Explanation’ mengenai buku Islamic State?

My reply: Tak de keperluan. The party is swiftly moving on. Kalau layan komentar kedai kopi yang tersangkut dikurun ke 15 Masihi, sampai bila pun tak habis. Idea utama buku well-received by pimpinan. Cukup lah tu. Buat penat je kalau layan mereka yang masih nak bermentaliti pembangkang.

WHO NEEDS AN ISLAMIC STATE? Book launch

Speaker: Dr. Abdelwahab El-Affendi

Venue: Abrar House, 45 Crawford Place, London W1H 4LP (nearest tube: Edgware Rd or Marble Arch)

Date: 6.45 – 8.45pm, Friday 6th June 2008

Join us for the launch of the second edition of Dr. Affendi’s book, published by Malaysia Think Tank London (2008), and a discussion around this important theme. Dr. Affendi will present a critique of modern Islamic political thought on the “state,” in the form of a three-part dialogue with the West, with Islamic tradition and with 20th-century Muslim thinkers.

The author discusses the divide between Islamic values and the basic principles that guide Western political thought. He traces the development of Muslim constitutional practice and considers the current debate on the nature and desirability of an “Islamic state.” He separates the problems that are internally-derived from the by-products of Western culture.

Dr. Affendi argues that if Islamic values were brought to bear internationally, the entrenched dogmas of Western political thought as much as both the tradition-bound and modernist trends of Muslim thinking would have to be revised.

FREE ENTRANCE – ALL WELCOME.

We look forward to seeing you there. This presentation is in association with the UK branch of the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT), the Malaysia Think Tank London and The City Circle

Copies of “Who Needs an Islamic State?” will be available for sale at the special discounted price of ?9. A selection of titles published by the IIIT will also be available.

Istanbul 4

Because we didn’t arrive back to the hotel until the early hours this morning, day 4 was more like a “decompressing” day. After all, the conference finishes last night with the celebration at Sakarya. We didn’t go out until around 1 pm.
