Apparently Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, UMNO’s candidate in Tumpat, believes that labelling this and that as Islamic or not Islamic confuses Muslims.
The Star quoted him as saying:
“Islamic housing, Islamic finance, protection of women and Islamic Syariah are just labels … Islam is not about labelling, not about a name; it is about the actual practice of Islam as enshrined by the Syariah Law and the Quran”
Yeah, right. What about ISLAM Hadhari???
Perhaps that’s the reason for him to run as BN’s candidate..hurm.
I don’t quite agree with Dr Asyraf’s dismissal of the ‘Islamic’ label as confusion to the Muslims. While he is right in his contention that Islam is hardly about labels, that ought not to preclude any individual or group from using this term in their discourse, so long as this in no way implies absolute monopoly or exclusivist attitude. It is precisely the removal of ‘religious’ language in the public domain that there is no plurality of opinions such that when one individual or group claims this label, it is taken as the conclusive and final representative of the entire religion. Will this confuse the Muslims? Well my answer is we should leave that to the Muslims to decide for themselves – after all, isn’t that what democracy and ‘sapere aude’ is all about?

sempat bersama YB Dato’ Kamaruddin Jaffar, calun PAS (kini YB) lawan Dr Asyraf ketika fasa berkempen d Tumpat. YB Dato’ Kamaruddin juga terkejut dengan kemasukan Dr Asyraf, malah katanya kenapa perlu d ucap politik suku ugama suku. Agak ambitious, mungkin juga d buai oleh suku sakat tingkat 4.
sempat juga berkenalan dgn Dr Asyraf ketika beliau singgah d Dubai. bercerita kisah reformasi dan DSAI. rupa-rupanya tak kekal lama..
