Personal thoughts of Wan Saiful Wan Jan

Ulama ana je yang betul lah!

I was in Newcastle yesterday. We had a wonderful conversation over dinner, which prompted me to think of a dialogue as below:

Jamizan: Last week ana nak beli satu buku ni. Tapi ana takut Ustaz kita tegur. So ana pun tak jadi lah beli.

Nizam: Nasib baik anta tak beli. Buku tu memang tak bagus untuk dibaca.

Jamizan: Sebab apa?

Now… Terengganu state government

Apparently Ahmad Said will start his job as Terengganu MB regardless (Malaysiakini).

My opinion on this issue:

1. The Sultan should have accepted Idris Jusuh. He commands the support of the majority of BN ADUNs. But there is no point discussingthis now because the Sultan has decided to stick to his (royal highness) gun.

2. Those parties that are supporting the Sultan should remember that this case is setting a precedence. What if in the future a Sultan does not like the state head of PAS or DAP or PKR?

3. And, somehow, I have a feeling that someone else, a third person, will be the beneficiary of this crisis. If the PM and the Sultan want a compromise, they would choose someone other than both Ahmad and Idris. I wonder who that might be?

5. And, why in the world does the PM not go and talk to the King?

Hmmmm….. will direct election of PM and MBs solve the problem?

What is the Constitution for?

Patrick Henry (1736-1799), American revolution leader:

The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people, it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government — lest it come to dominate our lives and interests.

Waging the War of Ideas

Waging the War of Ideas CoverOmar Khan’s post on his blog remidned me of the book ‘Waging the War of Ideas’, by John Blundell, which you can download in full below.

In particular, pay close attention to the story on page 17, and in particular paragraph 3, which I quote below:

1946: Recently demobilised from Britain’s Royal Air Force, highly decorated fighter pilot Antony Fisher finds in the Reader’s Digest a condensation of F. A. Hayek’s classic critique of socialism,
The Road to Serfdom. It confirms his own worries about his country’s tilt toward socialism.

Travelling to London, Fisher seeks out Hayek at the London School of Economics (LSE). ‘What can I do? Should I enter politics?’ he asks. With Fisher’s war record, good looks, gift for speaking, and excellent education, it is no idle question.

‘No,’ replies Hayek. ‘Society’s course will be changed only by a change in ideas. First you must reach the intellectuals, the teachers and writers, with reasoned argument. It will be their influence on society which will prevail, and the politicians will follow.’

1949: Ralph Harris, a young researcher from the Conservative Party, gives a Saturday afternoon lecture in a small village in southeastern England. Fisher – now a farmer – is present and loves what he hears. Taking Harris aside after the meeting, he explains his ideas for an organisation to make the free-market case to intellectuals. ‘One day,’ he says, ‘when my ship comes in, I’d like to create something which will do for the non-Labour parties what the [socialist] Fabian Society did for the Labour Party.’ Harris is excited. ‘If you get any further,’ he says, ‘I’d like to be considered as the man to run such a group.’

The book was first published and 2001, and was republished in 2007.

It was this book that inspired me to do something to spread freedom and liberty Malaysia.

The NEP has ended

Malaysiakini reports of protests around the country following the announcement by Penang state government that they will not abide by the practices of the NEP.

UMNO Penang even held a demonstration.

To those who kept on defending the NEP, please read the report below from Bernama. Even the Prime Minister has declared that the NEP has ended.

It is not just UMNO

In an interview after the 2008 election, Tun Mahathir said:

During my time they would challenge me. Here I was not allowed to speak. I was given invitations to give talk to Umno members but these were withdrawn.

I can assure him that censoring dissenting voices is not just UMNO.

Of Perak state government (II)

My post on Perak state government generated many comments (and about 14,000 hits!!!). Thank you very much to all those who contributed. I have come to this conclusion:

The ethnicity / party of the MB candidate should not matter as long as the person receives backing from all 3 coalition party.

But, if the ethnic criteria really is in the state constitution, then the first move of the new state government should be to amend it. If they can get 2/3 majority by persuading some BN MPs, Perak can become a beacon of hope, showing how serious the Barisan Rakyat is in removing ethnic politics.

Of course, due to the concerns that will exist at the grassroot level, they need to do some serious campaigning and explaining before such amendment is made.

Having said that, I still feel DAP should have first refusal for the post of MB.
